Often panic attacks are triggered. For example, a person might be afraid of  crowds and when they find themselves in this position then it triggers off the panic attack.

Although a person suffering from panic attacks might feel as though they are dying, panic attacks in themselves are not dangerous. They are unbearable to the sufferer and may feel like you are going to die, but panic attacks can not kill you.

The very nature of a panic attack is that the person panics, but to beat this it is important to learn how to control the attack.

Many counsellors specialise in helping people with panic attacks and might work on changing the thought processes of a sufferer as in cognitive behavioural therapy.

When practising breathing techniques as part of the panic attack therapy it allows the body to take in less oxygen. During a panic attack a person usually takes in too much oxygen and this is what causes the unpleasant symptoms.

Simple massaging techniques can often help during a panic attack as this will help to relax the mind and body and help in overcoming panic atacks. Gentle massaging of the neck can help to ease and relax the gland within the neck that is responsible for making hormones and this will also decrease the heart rate.

Sucking a sweet or having a drink of water with sugar in it can help as sugar acts as a natural tranquilliser. Understanding the triggers of the panic attack are also very important for recovery since understanding the triggers can help to fight the panic attack. Once the triggers are understood then counselling will be very effective in talking about the triggers and finding out the underlying causes.
